I know that sounds like a sales pitch. I'm not a salesperson. In my role coordinating emergency safety equipment orders for industrial facilities, I've handled maybe 300 rush orders—or 250, I'd have to check the system—and almost every one started with a price-based decision that went sideways. So let me make the argument for looking at the total cost of ownership before you buy anything from a Honeywell full facepiece respirator to a class 2 hard hat.

It's just a way to add up the things you'll actually pay for after the invoice: cartridge availability, training time, replacement cycles, false alarms, downtime, compliance paperwork, and the cost of somebody getting hurt. When I compared our Q1 and Q2 orders side-by-side—same workers, same hazards, different brands—I finally understood why price shopping was costing us more, not less.

In North America, the mark that matters is on the inside: ANSI/ISEA Z89.1 Type I or Type II, plus an electrical class rating. A Type I helmet protects against blows to the top only. A Type II helmet—what many sites call a class 2 hard hat—also handles impacts to the front, back, and sides. The shell of a cheap Type I helmet can look almost identical. This is where total cost thinking matters. The cheaper, less comfortable earplug may have a high NRR on paper. But if it sits in a vending machine or a locker, it doesn't protect anyone. Honeywell's Howard Leight LaserLite and Max Lite earplugs are inexpensive in bulk, but their real advantage is that workers can be trained to insert them consistently in a few minutes. That training, not the plug price, is where the return on investment comes from.
Someone will tell me they have to buy what the budget allows. I get it. But budget decisions made in November show up in the hearing test records the next October. A single workers comp claim for noise-induced hearing loss will buy an awful lot of earplugs.

Buy to the standard, not to the sticker.
