1. Is Honeywell safety gear worth the price?

The short answer: yes, but for better reasons than the marketing suggests.

I learned this the expensive way. In 2019, I ordered 30 budget hard hats for a crew refresh. They passed ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2019 on paper. They also gave people headaches by the second hour, and two cracked after one season outdoors. When I compared them side by side with a Honeywell Fibre-Metal model—same day, same sunlight—the difference was obvious: a better suspension system, a smoother shell, no rough edges.

Seeing that contrast made me realize I'd been saving $4 per hat and paying for it in complaints and turnover. In my first year—2017—I mounted a PRO N100 too close to an exhaust vent. The sensor kept reading fresh air, and the unit never once went into alarm during a real test. The upside of DIY was saving $350 on an installer. The risk was getting the placement wrong and missing a leak. I kept asking myself: is $350 worth potentially failing to detect a gas leak? It wasn't. The service call, recalibration, and repositioned mount cost $890.

Three things to check before you mount one: the clearance diagram in the manual, the sensor orientation, and the wiring connections. In that order.

One thing the manual makes obvious (if you read it): the detector needs a scheduled bump test.

A detector that's never tested is just an expensive wall decoration.

3. Are cowboy hard hats actually safe?

A cowboy hard hat is a wide-brim hard hat styled like a cowboy hat. It's not a costume piece—not if it's ANSI-rated, anyway. The protection test is the same as any industrial hard hat: ANSI/ISEA Z89.1-2019 for impact and penetration. The brim isn't for impact. It's for shade and rain runoff.

My mistake was assuming the wider brim meant "extra protection." It doesn't. The shell and suspension are what save your head.

If I remember correctly, Honeywell's Fibre-Metal line has offered wide-brim models that fit the cowboy profile, but don't quote me on the current catalog—it changes. Whatever you buy, check for the Z89.1 marking inside the shell. No marking? It's a hat, not a hard hat.

One practical thing we learned: cowboy brims can be a pain for truck head clearance and storage racks. Measure before you order a fleet's worth.

4. Honeywell or Klein hard hat—which should I pick?

I've worn both. Crews have strong opinions about both. Look, I'm not going to say one brand is universally better—head shapes don't work that way.

Here's the thing: the right hard hat is the one your crew will actually wear. A hat that sits in the truck because it's uncomfortable protects nobody. Order samples. Have people wear them for a full shift. Then decide.

5. Safety glasses or safety goggles—what's the actual difference?

Safety glasses look like normal glasses with impact-rated lenses. They meet ANSI/ISEA Z87.1-2020 and handle flying debris well. They're comfortable and ventilated. Goggles form a sealed cup around the eyes. They also meet Z87.1, but the seal is the whole point—they keep out liquids, chemical splashes, and fine particles that slip right around glasses.

My mistake: I ordered 40 pairs of safety glasses for a battery room where the crew handles sulfuric acid. Glasses looked professional and the crew liked them. But acid splash travels along the frame and into the eye. Goggles were the right call. We caught the error before anyone got hurt, but the reorder and the pointed conversation with the safety manager cost $1,200.

Rule of thumb: flying objects? Glasses are usually fine. Liquids or airborne dust? Goggles. And if you're still unsure, OSHA 1910.133 will decide for you—it requires eye protection wherever splash or flying particles are a realistic hazard.

6. Will Honeywell treat my small order like it matters?

A genuine Honeywell product has proper markings and traceability. If a quote comes in 30% below market, ask where it's coming from. A few extra minutes of due diligence is cheaper than explaining to OSHA how failed gear got through your inspection.

If a distributor treats your $200 order like a nuisance, that's a signal about them, not about you. Move on.
