Checkpoint: If any of these items fail, tag the unit and schedule replacement. Don't try to repair a damaged cylinder—it's not worth the risk.
Most people stop here. But a visual check alone doesn't tell you if the extinguisher is actually functional. That's where Step 2 comes in.
Step 2: The Tag and Documentation Check (Where Hidden Time Bombs Live)
This is the step that separates a casual glance from a real inspection. Every fire extinguisher should have a tag or a sticker attached. This tag is your primary source of truth.
What to check on the tag:
- Manufacturing date: Look for a small metal tag or a sticker that says "Date of Mfg" or "MANUFACTURED". For a dry chemical extinguisher (the most common type), the typical service life is 12 years from the manufacturing date, per NFPA 10 standards. After that, it must be pressure tested or replaced. Some extinguishers have a 6-year life—check the specific model.
- Last professional inspection date: There should be a record of a "6-year maintenance" or "internal inspection" or "hydrostatic test" date. A professional inspection is required every 6 years for dry chemical extinguishers. If you can't find a record, assume it's overdue.
- Annual maintenance check: Look for a sticker or a tag from a certified fire protection company showing the last annual inspection. This is a basic check (pressure, condition, weight). If the last date is more than 12 months ago, schedule an inspection.
- Monthly self-inspection log: Many companies require a monthly check by facility staff. The tag usually has space for dates and initials. If you see a 6-month gap in the log, that's a red flag.
Common mistake: People check the last inspection date and think the extinguisher is fine. But a unit can pass an inspection and still be expired if its manufacturing date is past the service life. I've seen this happen—a facility had an extinguisher that was inspected annually, but it was 14 years old and overdue for replacement.
Checkpoint: If the manufacturing date is more than 12 years ago, or if the 6-year internal inspection hasn't been performed within the last 6 years, replace the extinguisher. Don't just re-charge it. The cylinder itself may be compromised.
Step 3: The Gauge and Pressure Check (The 'Looked Fine' Trap)
You've done the visual check. You've checked the tag. Now it's time to confirm the extinguisher is actually pressurized and ready to use.
What to check:
- The pressure gauge reading: Most extinguishers have a gauge with a green zone (charged), a red zone on the left (undercharged/needs recharge), and a red zone on the right (overcharged). The needle should be in the green zone. If it's in the red, the extinguisher needs to be recharged or replaced.
- Gauge needle position: Is the needle sitting firmly in the green, or is it hovering near the edge? A needle that's in the green but very close to the red zone is a sign that the pressure is low and the extinguisher may fail under use.
What most people miss: A gauge that reads 'full' doesn't mean the extinguisher is functional. If the cylinder is corroded internally, the pressure can be correct but the discharge nozzle or valve could be blocked. That's why Step 1's visual check for physical damage is critical. Also, a common issue is that the gauge itself can fail. If you see a cracked lens or a foggy gauge, consider it unreliable.
Quick test: The weight check. Pick up the extinguisher. Does it feel roughly as heavy as it should? A partially discharged extinguisher may feel lighter. If you have a scale, compare the actual weight to the target weight printed on the label. If it's more than 10% under, it needs service.
Checkpoint: If the gauge is in the red, or if the unit feels significantly lighter than expected, tag it and replace it. Do not attempt to recharge a unit that has gauge issues—the internal valve may be faulty.
Common Mistakes & Important Notes

- Confusing 'inspection' with 'expiration': An annual inspection doesn't extend the extinguisher's life. It just confirms it's still functional at that moment. The same extinguisher can pass 12 annual inspections and still be expired.
- Ignoring the tag format: Some manufacturers use a date code like "M0423" (April 2023). Some use a plain date. If the tag isn't clear, look up the model number online or contact the manufacturer.
- Assuming all extinguishers are the same: CO2 extinguishers have different inspection and lifespan requirements than dry chemical ones. Check the manufacturer's manual.
- Relying solely on the gauge: The gauge is helpful, but it's not a substitute for a professional internal inspection. If you can't find a record of a 6-year inspection, schedule one.
One more thing: if you're buying replacement extinguishers, look for honeywell or other trusted brands. We use honeywell products in our facility because the reliability data is documented.
