The Surface Problem: People Think All PPE is Created Equal

From the outside, it looks like a hard hat is a hard hat. A gas detector is a gas detector. You pick a trusted brand like Honeywell, check the product page, and click buy. The reality is much messier.

“People assume all hard hats provide the same protection. What they don't see is that ANSI Z89.1 has two types (Type I and Type II) and three classes (E, G, C). Mix them up and you're betting someone's safety on a spec sheet you never read.”

The same goes for gas detectors. It's tempting to think “one detector covers all gases.” But a catalytic bead sensor for combustible gases won't detect H2S or CO. An electrochemical sensor for toxic gases can't tell you if you're in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere. Most people don't realize that a single Honeywell gas detector model often has interchangeable sensor heads – but you have to order the right one.

And then there's the whole “safety helmet vs hard hat” debate. People assume they're interchangeable. They're not. The Deeper Reason: We Oversimplify Safety to Save Time (and Money)

It's tempting to think you can just compare unit prices. But identical-looking products from the same brand can have wildly different certifications. I once ordered a Honeywell ABC dry powder fire extinguisher thinking “ABC means it works on all fires.” True – but not all ABC extinguishers are rated for the same square footage. But here's the thing I learned the hard way: no single brand – not Honeywell, not 3M, not MSA – can be the expert on every application.

The vendor who says “this isn't our strength – here's a specialist who can help” earns my trust for everything else. Honeywell themselves will tell you they don't make every type of fire extinguisher for every environment; they focus on the most common commercial and industrial categories. That's not a weakness – it's honesty.

So what do I do now?

  1. Start with the hazard assessment, not the product catalog. What are you protecting against? Impact, electrical, chemical, thermal, visibility, respiratory? Only then look for the right spec.
  2. Learn the standards. ANSI Z89.1 for hard hats, NFPA 10 for fire extinguishers, ANSI Z87.1 for safety glasses. A product without the right standard mark is a gamble.
  3. Call the manufacturer before ordering. I've spoken to Honeywell's technical support line more times than I can count. They've helped me avoid three major mistakes simply by asking two questions: “What's the environment?” and “What standard are you trying to meet?”
  4. Build a verification checklist. The third time I ordered the wrong specification, I created a mandatory pre-purchase review process. Every order now requires a hazard-to-spec cross-check. It took 47 potential errors out of our system in 18 months.
