A quality inspector's practical 7-step checklist for verifying industrial safety equipment—gas detectors, fall protection tripods, N95 respirators, safety glasses, and site barriers—before you trust them on the job.

When I first started reviewing safety equipment for industrial customers, I assumed the biggest risk was counterfeit products. Over 4 years and a few hundred inspections later, I've learned the real danger is much more boring: most safety gear fails because nobody actually checks it after purchase.

I'm the quality compliance manager for an industrial safety supplier. I review every delivery before it reaches customers—roughly 40 to 50 unique items a week. In 2024, I rejected about 12% of first deliveries. Not because manufacturers are careless, but because small defects slip through when there's no one looking for them.

This checklist is for safety managers, maintenance supervisors, and site leads who've bought PPE and need to verify it's actually going to do its job. It takes about 15 minutes. Seven checks, in the order that makes sense on a real job site.

Step 1: Bump test your gas detectors before every shift

The most common problem I see with Honeywell gas detectors isn't hardware failure—it's that the unit powers on, so everyone assumes it's working. A detector that lights up but hasn't been bump tested can be off by thousands of ppm.

Here's what to do:

  • Run a bump test with calibration gas. If it fails, calibrate it before use.
  • Check the sensor expiry date. Most sensors have a rated lifespan of 2 to 3 years. If you can't remember when the sensor was last replaced, assume it's expired.
  • Verify the calibration gas itself isn't past its expiration date. Expired gas gives you a false confidence.

This is the step people skip because "the detector was fine yesterday." That's exactly the mindset that leads to confined space incidents.

Step 2: Inspect fall protection tripods for damage that isn't obvious

If you're using a Honeywell safety tripod (you might see it listed as "treppiede" in some European product catalogs) for confined space entry or rescue, the visual inspection needs to go deeper than "does it look okay?"

What I check on every tripod:

  • Legs for dents or deformities. Even small ones matter on aluminum.
  • Anchor points for corrosion or stress marks.
  • Webbing or cables for fraying, especially near the connection points.
  • Leg locks—they should engage smoothly. If they jam, even intermittently, pull the unit from service.

If I remember correctly, and I want to say this was 2023 but don't quote me on the exact year, we received a returned tripod with a seized leg lock after only 8 months of use. The root cause was sand ingestion—the unit was being used at a dusty industrial site. The manual didn't specifically call out dusty environments, which should've been a warning sign in itself. Moving parts need extra attention in dirty conditions.

Step 3: N95 respirator fit—the steps most people skip

"How to put on N95 mask" is one of the most searched phrases in industrial safety. That's honestly fine, because most people are doing it wrong.

The correct sequence:

  1. Hold the mask in one hand and shape the nose piece with your fingertips. Don't pinch it closed yet.
  2. Place the straps: bottom strap first, below your ears, then the top strap above. Bottom-first is the part everyone gets wrong.
  3. Mold the nose piece around your nose with two fingers.
  4. Positive pressure check: exhale sharply and feel for air leaking around the nose bridge.
  5. Negative pressure check: inhale. The mask should pull slightly against your face.

It sounds basic. But in hundreds of fit tests I've witnessed, about a third of trained professionals skip the seal check entirely. They put the mask on in three seconds and walk straight into the work area. Also worth noting: facial hair breaks the seal. A respirator can't fit properly over a beard. That's not a judgment call, it's physics.

Step 4: Check safety glasses for coating performance, not just scratches

Everyone holds safety glasses up to the light and looks for scratches. That's good—but it misses the issue that actually causes workers to stop wearing them: coating failure.

Anti-fog coatings wear out over time. When they do, workers start wiping lenses on their shirts, which leaves micro-scratches that permanently reduce optical clarity. Then they stop wearing the glasses entirely because they "can't see properly."

Here's my recommendation: when a batch of safety glasses arrives, write the delivery date on the case with a permanent marker. If anti-fog performance degrades within 6 months, that's a supplier issue. If it fails after 18 months of daily use, that's normal wear—replace that pair. Brands like Uvex document this well in their product literature. The point isn't the brand, it's that coating performance is measurable and you should actually measure it.

Step 5: Walk your barrier line

This step looks unrelated to PPE at first, but it's part of the same protection system. Safety equipment isn't just what you wear—it's also what stands between workers and hazards.

On sites near livestock or agricultural operations, that means checking fencing. Hog panel fences take serious abuse: animals lean on them, equipment bumps them, weather corrodes them. A bent panel with a broken wire creates a breach that turns a controlled-access site into an uncontrolled one.

Take the walk. Look at the fence line. If you can't confidently say the barrier will contain what it's supposed to contain, fix it before work begins. (Should mention: temporary site barriers need the same attention. The plastic snow-fence setups fail more often than people expect.)

Step 6: Read the certification labels. All of them.

Every PPE item I approve carries a certification label. The problem: people see a logo and move on without reading what class of protection that label certifies.

For example:

  • ANSI Z87.1 safety glasses: the "V" marking means the lens is impact-rated at elevated levels. Without it, you've got basic splash protection, not impact protection.
  • NIOSH-approved N95 masks carry a TC-84A approval number. If that number's not on the label, ask the supplier why.
  • Fall protection tripods have a weight rating. It needs to match your heaviest worker with tools. Don't assume it does.

I should add that if you're buying through a reseller rather than directly from the manufacturer, verify the included documentation matches what's on the label. Mismatches happen more than you'd think.

Step 7: The shake test

This is the most informal check on the list. I didn't include it until 2022, when a strap failure dropped a $2,000 piece of equipment onto a concrete floor (unfortunately).

Here's how it works: hold the item by its strap, give it three or four firm shakes, and listen.

You're listening for:

  • Frayed internal threads snapping
  • Contamination grinding inside buckles
  • Loose rivets rattling

It's not a replacement for a proper inspection. But it catches failures that visual checks miss. It takes 15 seconds. (Should mention: don't do this with a gas detector still in its vehicle mount. Shake the detector, not the mount, and never against a hard surface—I've seen sensor damage from impact.)

Common mistakes I still see in audits

Here's the honest part. Even with training, the same errors keep showing up:

  • "Brand new" isn't "verified." I've rejected new items with stitching defects and cracked lenses. New means unused, not flawless.
  • Skipping documentation. If you can't prove when you inspected something, it didn't get inspected. A simple log—date, item, inspector, result—takes 10 seconds per entry.
  • Not involving the actual workers. The person wearing the respirator should be the one saying whether it fits. If a worker says the fit is wrong, that's not an inconvenience, that's a safety issue. I don't have hard data on wrong-size selection rates, but anecdotally, about a quarter of the workers I've fit-tested initially grab the wrong size.
  • Familiarity breeds blindness. The same detector sits in the same truck every day. Eventually nobody sees it anymore. That's why a written checklist, even a simple one, matters.

One last thing. I still kick myself for a shipment I approved in 2021: safety glasses, 200 units, expedited to meet a project deadline. I skipped the coating check because the client needed them that week. The lenses were fine, but one batch had anti-fog coating failures.
